Alimony refers to maintenance paid by one
spouse to another, regardless of whether the couple had
children. The state of Wisconsin does not use the term "alimony,"
rather, the statutes refer to spousal support as maintenance.
Often times, people will refer to it as family
support or separate maintenance. Family support is the
combination of child support and maintenance.
The IRS allows both the payor and the payee
of alimony to include those payments on a tax return. You
can refer to Wisconsin IRS Publication 504, Divorced
or Separated Individuals and Tax Topic 452 Alimony
Paid, or to answer all of your questions about support
and maintenance provided under Wisconsin law, contact
